Finding a Solution for Your Economic Instability

Our Current Economic Instability

If you’re worried about the state of your finances, employment, or debt then you’re not alone.  According to a recent Gallup poll, 69% of Americans’ number one concern is the economy.
The individual concerns about the economy include:

• lack of job creation (6%)
• outsourcing of jobs to other countries (6%)
• continuing economic decline and instability (10%)
• the growing federal deficit (15%)
• unemployment (26%)

With all the problems the private sector faces, the public sector isn’t helping.  That’s partly because government spending is growing faster than the entire private sector that supports it.  According to Forbes magazine[1], the rising rate of government spending is 50% higher than the growth of our Gross Domestic Product.  That’s not a path to a sustainable economic future.

Even when bright spots appear, like a lower unemployment rate, it is often due to fewer people in the job market, rather than the result of having more people employed.  Nearly six million fewer people are employed today than just four years ago.  So many people unemployed combined with a lack of existing jobs have made things next to impossible to turn around.  In order to get American employment back to 2007 levels, we would have to create about 200,000 jobs per month, every month, for nearly three straight years!

Concern for the Future.

Every day, 10,000 people turn 65 years old in the U.S., and will continue to do so for the next eighteen years.
How many people are ready and able to retire at 65?  Some believe that the new retirement age is closer to 80, because we simply do not have the means to sustain a retirement.  Like most Americans, the vast majority of the baby boomer generation has not saved enough money for retirement.

This lack of assets is troubling, because these days our own personal savings and investments are more important than ever.  If you are planning on relying on Social Security as your principal means of support during retirement, you will have to make due with only about $1,200.00 per month.  Could you survive on that now?  How about 5, 10, or 20 years from now with the threat of inflation, rising energy costs, and further economic instability?

What can you do?

Bottom line, if you don’t have enough equity, assets, or savings, you need to find a steady source of additional revenue.  Supplementing your current earnings can ensure that you’ll both provide for the current lifestyle and future retirement that you deserve.

Home-based Franchises are Great, but What’s Better?

For many people, their dream job is to be able to work from home.  Being a small business owner offers a wide array of freedoms and working from home gives the opportunity for more time with family.  While it can be difficult to start a business from scratch, many budding entrepreneurs look to buy-into home based franchises.  In 2011 an article by the Wall Street Journal looked at the growing industry of home-based franchises, which were expanding at a rate of 7% per year.  What the Wall Street Journal found was that, while home-based franchises offered lots of opportunity, there were often hidden downsides.
Part of what makes these franchises so attractive is certainly a great opportunity, but also affordability.  Most companies advertise franchise fees below $50,000, touting their relative low start-up cost.  But, the buyer should always beware of hidden fees and expenses.  Most new business owners don’t think to budget for monthly technology and marketing fees, travel costs to training sessions and conventions, purchasing of sales leads, or renting storage space for their wares.  Some companies also take a percentage of sales in royalties!

Also, many people have a mistaken notion of how much work goes into running a home-based business.  While the explosion of information technology in the last decade has done much to facilitate communication with customers and clients, much of the time you spend on the business is actually still spent outside the home, “pounding the pavement” by chasing leads and holding meetings.

Anyone looking to get a fresh start in life by owning their own home-based business should carefully examine all the options.  While franchises offer good opportunity, other home-based businesses can provide just as much profit potential without the hidden costs and fees.  Look for companies that offer to handle some of the “heavy lifting” for you, such as product shipping and developing marketing materials.  If that business offers a large network of support, that’s even better.
